Underarm darkness removal is usually sold as a product: a cream, a roll-on, a pack. Most of the darkening was caused by something done to the skin every day, though, and a product applied on top of that habit has very little to work with.
What causes dark underarms covers the reasons in detail. This post is the practical half: what to change and in what order.
First, check the texture
Before anything else, look at the skin in good light and feel it.
If it is flat and simply darker than the arm, carry on with the steps below.
If it is thickened and velvety, with a soft edge, and the back of the neck or the groin looks the same, stop here. That pattern is called acanthosis nigricans. It is linked to insulin resistance and hormonal conditions, and it needs a doctor and a blood test. A dark neck describes it more fully.
An itchy rash, a scaly border or a sudden change over a few weeks also belongs with a doctor.
Step one: change the deodorant
Fragrance and alcohol are the two ingredients most likely to keep underarm skin mildly inflamed for years without ever hurting enough to notice. Inflamed brown skin leaves pigment behind.
Switch to a fragrance-free deodorant. Apply it to dry skin, and never on the day of hair removal. If the skin under the old product was slightly itchy or pink at the end of the day, this step alone often accounts for most of the improvement. Fragrance in skincare explains why it is the usual suspect.
Step two: make hair removal gentler
Shaving leaves the dark base of each hair visible under the skin, which looks like shadow, and a blunt blade scrapes the surface every time.
Shave on wet skin with a gel or a plain lotion, use a sharp blade, and take light strokes. Shave less often if you can. Waxing removes the shadow for longer and brings its own irritation, so it suits some people and not others. Hair removal creams are the roughest option for this area.
Whatever the method, leave the skin alone for a day afterwards. No deodorant, no acids, no scrubbing.
Step three: reduce the rubbing
Skin that is rubbed thickens and darkens to protect itself. Tight synthetic sleeves in humid weather are the common cause, and the fix is loose cotton when the weather allows it. Scrubbing the area in the shower counts as rubbing too. A soft wash with the hands is enough.
Step four: moisturise, then add one active
A plain, fragrance-free moisturiser once a day keeps the skin comfortable and makes it look smoother straight away.
After two or three weeks of the first three steps, a leave-on product with niacinamide is a reasonable addition. It is well tolerated on thin skin and it slows the transfer of pigment into the surface cells. Alpha arbutin is another option and is also gentle.
Exfoliating acids such as lactic or glycolic acid can help where the surface has thickened. Use a low-strength product, at night, two or three times a week at most, and never close to hair removal. If it stings, stop. An irritated fold gets darker, which is the opposite of the plan.
Add one thing at a time. If two new products start in the same week and the skin reacts, there is no way to tell which one did it. How to patch test takes five minutes to read.
Step five: give it months
The pigment already in the skin leaves as that skin is replaced, and skin on the body turns over slowly. Expect to judge the result over three to four months. A photo in the same light once a month is more reliable than a daily look in the mirror.
If nothing has changed by then and the causes have been removed, see a dermatologist. Prescription creams and in-clinic peels exist for stubborn cases, and laser hair removal ends the cycle of shaving irritation for people who are suited to it. Those are decisions to make with a doctor who has seen the skin.
What to leave out
Lemon, baking soda and toothpaste all irritate thin skin. Hard scrubbing is friction. Bleach lightens hair and strips the surface.
Creams that promise underarm whitening in days are the real risk. Many contain steroids or other drugs that lighten fast and then thin the skin, leave stretch marks and darken it again. How to tell whether a cream contains a steroid covers the warning signs.
Honest limits
Underarm skin is a shade or two deeper than the arm in most people, and that baseline does not change. What can fade is the darkening that friction and irritation added on top, which is usually the larger part.
Cham makes no deodorant and no underarm product. The Brightening Face and Body Serum and the Brightening Body Lotion carry niacinamide and are made for use below the neck, which is the only honest claim available here. They fit step four, and they are no substitute for steps one to three.
