Can I use alpha arbutin with vitamin C?
Yes. They slow pigment at different points and are comfortable in the same routine. Many tone-evening formulas carry both.
Yes. Alpha arbutin slows the enzyme that makes pigment, and vitamin C reduces the oxidative signals that set it off. They do not interfere with each other. If your vitamin C is pure ascorbic acid, it goes on first.
Why they suit each other
Alpha arbutin acts on tyrosinase, the enzyme that produces melanin. Vitamin C works earlier, on the oxidative stress that tells pigment cells to produce more, and has a mild effect on the same enzyme.
Two ingredients at moderate strength on two steps is usually easier on the skin than one ingredient pushed hard. Alpha arbutin also has a quiet irritation record, so it adds very little to whatever sting the vitamin C brings.
The order
Pure ascorbic acid needs a low pH and clean dry skin, so it goes on first. Alpha arbutin is not fussy about pH and can follow as soon as the first layer has dried.
Stabilised vitamin C derivatives are less demanding. With one of those, apply whichever product is thinner first.
Finish with a moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning.
Morning or night
Both can go on in the morning, where vitamin C does its antioxidant work under sunscreen. Another common split is vitamin C in the morning and alpha arbutin at night. Either works. The routine you will keep to is the better choice.
What to expect
Pigment changes as skin renews, which takes about four weeks per cycle, and visible change usually needs several cycles. Judge the pairing over two to three months.
Sunscreen decides most of the outcome. Daylight triggers the process both ingredients are slowing, and unprotected sun undoes their work faster than they can do it.
When to stop
Stinging that does not fade, redness or new dryness usually comes from the vitamin C. Drop it for a week and keep the alpha arbutin. If the skin settles, bring vitamin C back less often or switch to a gentler form.
Both are in the Brightening Face Mask, the arbutin alongside two stabilised forms of vitamin C.
This page describes how ingredients behave together. It does not diagnose. A prescriber, a pregnancy, or a diagnosed skin condition outranks anything written here.
Related questions
Which goes first, alpha arbutin or vitamin C?
Pure ascorbic acid goes first, on clean dry skin, and alpha arbutin follows. With a vitamin C derivative the order matters much less, so apply the thinner product first.
Can I use alpha arbutin and vitamin C every day?
Yes. Both are suitable for daily use. If your skin is sensitive, start with one, add the other after a few weeks, and use sunscreen every morning.
Is the combination stronger than either alone?
It covers two steps of pigment formation in place of one. That tends to be gentler than using a high strength of a single ingredient. It does not make the result arrive faster.
