Can I use kojic acid with niacinamide?

Yes. The two act at different stages of pigment formation and are often put in the same formula. The cautions on this pair all belong to the kojic acid.

The short answer Fine together

Yes. Kojic acid slows the enzyme that makes pigment, and niacinamide slows the handover of that pigment to the surface. They do not interfere with each other. Patch test the kojic acid first, because it is the one that causes reactions.

Why they work together

Skin colour is built in steps. An enzyme called tyrosinase makes melanin inside the pigment cells, and the finished pigment is then passed to the surrounding skin cells, where it becomes visible.

Kojic acid slows the enzyme. Niacinamide slows the handover. Because they act on different steps, using both covers more of the process than pushing either one harder, and neither gets in the way of the other.

How to layer them

Apply the thinner product first, then the other, then a moisturiser. Both can be used morning or night. If your kojic acid product is a cream and your niacinamide is a serum, the serum goes first.

Use sunscreen every morning. Both ingredients are working against a process that daylight restarts, and without sun protection they achieve very little.

What to know about kojic acid

Kojic acid is a known cause of contact allergy in a minority of people. Test it on the inner arm for several days before it goes on your face, and stop at any itching or redness.

It is also unstable. A kojic acid product that has turned yellow-brown has oxidised and lost some of its activity. Buy small sizes and store them away from light.

Reactions matter more than usual here. Irritated skin makes extra pigment, so a product that inflames your skin will leave you with more of the marks you were trying to fade.

How long before judging

Pigment changes as new skin is made, and that takes weeks. Give this pairing two to three months of daily use with sunscreen before deciding whether it is working.

Cham does not make a kojic acid product, and nothing in the range should be read as a substitute for one.

This page describes how ingredients behave together. It does not diagnose. A prescriber, a pregnancy, or a diagnosed skin condition outranks anything written here.

Related questions

Which goes first, kojic acid or niacinamide?

Whichever is thinner. Two watery serums can go on in either order. Give the first one half a minute to settle, then apply the second and a moisturiser.

Does niacinamide reduce kojic acid irritation?

Niacinamide supports the skin barrier, which can make a routine more comfortable overall. It does not prevent an allergy to kojic acid. If kojic acid makes your skin itch or redden, stop using it.

Can I use a kojic acid soap and then a niacinamide serum?

Yes. The soap is rinsed off and the serum stays on, so they do not clash. If the soap leaves your skin tight or stinging, the soap is the problem, and the serum is not the fix for it.
