Search for pigmentation advice in India and within two results you will meet a list: foods for glowing skin, fruits for fair skin, the drink to have on an empty stomach. The genre predates the internet by decades and has adapted to it beautifully, because it costs nothing to produce, promises something everyone wants, and can never quite be disproved by an individual reader.
The short version: no food changes skin colour, and no diet fades a dark mark on its own. The longer version is more interesting, because diet does have two real routes to affecting how even skin looks, and both of them are medical rather than cosmetic.
Why the food lists do not work
Skin colour is set by melanin: how much is made, what type, and how it is distributed, which the melanin post covers. That process is governed by genetics and by ultraviolet exposure, with hormones and inflammation as modifiers. There is no nutrient that switches it down, and no food that acts as a tyrosinase inhibitor in any amount you could eat.
The antioxidant argument is the most sophisticated version of the claim and it is worth engaging with. Antioxidants in food do support skin health generally, and vitamin C is genuinely needed for collagen synthesis. But eating an antioxidant-rich diet is a background condition for healthy skin, not a mechanism for fading a specific mark, and the concentration reaching skin through digestion is nothing like what topical application delivers to the surface. Whether vitamin C brightens skin covers the topical side of the same question, where the honest answer is already modest.
And the promise underneath these lists is usually the one no product may legally make anyway: not evening the look of marks but changing skin colour, which is the line drawn in what skin brightening means.
The first real route: deficiency
Some nutritional deficiencies genuinely cause skin darkening, and this is the part of the diet conversation that deserves attention rather than dismissal.
Vitamin B12 deficiency can produce hyperpigmentation, often on the hands and feet, in skin creases and around the mouth, sometimes appearing before other symptoms do. It is a recognised presentation and it is common enough in vegetarian diets, which makes it relevant across much of India. Deficiencies of folate and iron have been associated with pigmentary changes too, and severe protein or general malnutrition affects skin colour and texture.
The important feature of all of these is that they are diagnosed with a blood test and corrected with treatment, not with a serum. Pigmentation that appeared without an obvious cause, that is spreading, that sits in unusual places, or that arrives alongside fatigue, is a reason to see a doctor. Skin getting darker without sun lists the same territory from the symptom side.
The second real route: inflammation
The other honest link is indirect. Anything that increases inflammation in the skin increases the chance of marks being left behind, because skin with more melanin answers inflammation with pigment. If a particular diet pattern worsens your acne, then it worsens your post-inflammatory pigmentation too, not by acting on melanin but by supplying more events for melanin to respond to.
The evidence linking diet to acne is real but narrower than the internet suggests, pointing mainly at high-glycaemic diets and, in some studies, at dairy, with substantial individual variation.
