The suspicion behind this question is fair. A bar of soap costs a fraction of a face wash, both make foam, both rinse off, and both leave skin feeling clean. If the difference were only fragrance and packaging, soap would be the sensible choice. The difference is not fragrance. It is chemistry, and it shows up on skin within minutes.
What soap is
True soap is made by reacting fats with an alkali. The result is a cleanser that works well precisely because it is alkaline: bar soaps typically sit far above skin's own acidity. Skin's surface runs mildly acidic, in the region of pH 4.5 to 5.5, and that acidity is functional. It keeps the outer layer's enzymes working, helps its resident microbes stay in balance, and supports the lipid mortar that holds water in.
Wash that surface with something strongly alkaline and the pH jumps. Skin does pull itself back down toward its own acidity afterwards, but the round trip is not free. While the surface sits at the wrong pH, the enzymes that maintain the barrier work poorly, and the wash itself has taken some of the barrier's lipids with it. Do that twice a day and the recovery periods start to overlap.
What a face wash is
Most modern face washes are not soap at all. They are built on synthetic detergents, chosen because they can be blended to clean at a pH close to skin's own and to lift grime without hauling out the lipid mortar alongside it. That is the whole trick, and it is why the after-feel differs so noticeably: soap leaves skin squeaky and tight, a well-made wash leaves it soft.
Squeaky, it is worth saying plainly, is not clean. Squeaky is stripped. The squeak is what skin sounds like when the lipids that normally make it feel supple have gone down the drain. Tightness a few minutes after rinsing is the same message. Why the face gets the strictest standard
Body skin is thicker, less densely supplied with oil glands, and spends its day under fabric. It tolerates soap reasonably well, which is why generations have used the bar below the neck without drama. If a bar of soap on the body suits your skin, there is no case for abandoning it.
Facial skin is a different surface. It is thinner, more reactive, exposed all day, and it is where any routine's leave-on steps have to work. A stripped face is not a neutral starting point: it is oilier by afternoon, because the surface over-corrects, and it is tighter by evening, because the barrier is leaking water. The pattern of skin that manages to be greasy and parched at once has its own post: oily but dehydrated skin.
When soap on the face is fine, honestly
Occasionally, it is. A camping trip, a gym bag, a week at a relative's house: washing your face with soap now and then does no lasting damage to healthy skin. Skin recovers. The problem is not the event but the habit, because a twice-daily alkaline wash gives the barrier its insult faster than the barrier clears it.
There are also gentler bars. "Syndet bars" are detergent cleansers pressed into bar form, formulated near skin's pH, and they behave like a face wash that happens to be solid. The format is not the problem; the chemistry is. Read for the pH claim rather than the shape.
