How to fade dark spots on the face: start with which kind

"Dark spot" is one name for at least five different things. They form for different reasons and sit at different depths, so the product that fades one can do nothing for another. Most disappointment with spot serums comes from a reasonable ingredient used on the wrong kind of mark.

Marks left by a pimple, a bite or a burn

This is the commonest kind on Indian skin. The mark is flat, brown or grey-brown, and sits exactly where the injury was. Dermatologists call it post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: the skin was inflamed, and the pigment cells nearby overproduced in response.

These fade on their own if two things happen. The area is kept out of the sun, and it is left alone. Picking at a healing spot restarts the inflammation and the clock with it. Acne marks and acne scars explains how to tell a pigment mark from a red one and from a true scar, since each wants different handling.

Spots from years of sun

Sun spots are small and well defined, and they collect on the cheekbones, temples and the backs of the hands. They tend to arrive from the thirties onward. The sign that separates them from a tan is that winter does not shift them.

Creams and serums soften these a little. A dermatologist has procedures that do more, and that is the honest route if they bother you.

Patches, not spots

Melasma shows as larger patches with soft edges, roughly matched on both sides of the face: cheeks, forehead, upper lip. Hormones and light drive it together, and it deepens with heat as well as sun.

It belongs with a dermatologist first. Cosmetics have a supporting part at most, and scrubs and strong acids reliably make it worse. Melasma and where cosmetics stop and melasma compared with other pigmentation cover it properly.

Freckles and tan

Freckles are inherited, scattered across the nose and cheeks, darker in summer and lighter in winter. A tan is even across all the skin that saw the sun, and it fades by itself once exposure drops.

What helps across all of them

Sunscreen, every day. It does not remove a spot, but every kind listed here darkens with light, and nothing fades while it is being topped up.

Tone-evening ingredients come second. Niacinamide slows the handover of pigment into surface cells, and alpha arbutin and vitamin C slow its production. None of them bleaches existing pigment. That leaves as the skin renews, and the ingredients make sure less arrives to replace it.

Then time. How long pigmentation takes to fade gives the honest ranges, and the fade timeline tool narrows them for your own kind of mark.

What makes spots darker

Anything that irritates. Lemon juice, baking soda, toothpaste and harsh scrubs all inflame the skin, and inflamed skin in deeper tones makes more pigment. Parlour bleach does the same with a delay.

Fairness creams that work within days are the serious risk. Fast lightening usually means a steroid or another drug that should not be in a cosmetic, and the rebound is darker than the starting point. How to tell whether a cream contains a steroid lists the signs.

When a spot is a question for a doctor

See a dermatologist about any spot that is new and changing, has more than one colour or an uneven border, is raised, or bleeds or itches. The same goes for many spots appearing at once, or pigmentation that arrives alongside tiredness, weight change or a new medicine. None of that is a cosmetic matter.

Where the Cham range fits

The Brightening Face and Body Serum carries niacinamide, and the Brightening Face Mask carries alpha arbutin with two forms of vitamin C. They belong to the slow fading of marks left by acne, irritation and sun. They are not a melasma plan, they will do little for long-standing sun spots, and nothing in the range changes the tone skin has without those marks.
