Can I use hyaluronic acid with retinol?
Yes, and it is one of the easiest pairings there is. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, not an exfoliating acid, and it eases the dryness retinol causes.
Yes. Hyaluronic acid holds water in the upper layers of the skin, and most complaints about retinol are about dryness. Apply hyaluronic acid first, let it settle, then retinol, then a moisturiser to seal both in.
Why this pairing is easy
The name misleads people. Hyaluronic acid does not exfoliate and has nothing in common with glycolic or salicylic acid. It is a large molecule that binds water and sits in the upper layers of the skin.
Retinol speeds up skin renewal, and while the skin adjusts it loses water more easily. That shows up as tightness, flaking and stinging. A humectant puts some of that water back, which is why the two are so often used together.
The order
Cleanse. While the skin is still slightly damp, apply hyaluronic acid, since it works best with some water to hold.
Wait until the skin feels dry to the touch. Retinol applied to wet skin is absorbed faster and tends to sting.
Apply retinol, then a moisturiser over everything.
The buffered version
If retinol still irritates, put the moisturiser on before it. The moisturiser slows how quickly retinol reaches the skin. You give up a little strength and gain comfort, which is a fair trade in the first couple of months.
Do not skip the moisturiser
Hyaluronic acid draws water toward itself. In dry air, with nothing over it, a humectant can pull water up from the deeper skin and let it evaporate. A cream or lotion on top prevents that. This matters more in winter and in air-conditioned rooms.
When it is not enough
If the skin is peeling, burning or reacting to products it used to tolerate, hyaluronic acid will not rescue it. Stop the retinol for a week or two, keep to a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, and restart less often.
Sodium hyaluronate, a form of hyaluronic acid, is in the Cham cream, serum and lotion. Cham makes no retinol product.
This page describes how ingredients behave together. It does not diagnose. A prescriber, a pregnancy, or a diagnosed skin condition outranks anything written here.
Related questions
Which goes first, hyaluronic acid or retinol?
Hyaluronic acid first, on slightly damp skin. Let the skin dry to the touch, then apply retinol and finish with a moisturiser.
Does hyaluronic acid make retinol less effective?
No. It does not react with retinol or block it. It only adds water to the surface.
Can I use hyaluronic acid and retinol every night?
Hyaluronic acid, yes. Retinol should be built up slowly, starting every second or third night and increasing only if the skin stays comfortable.
