Sunscreen is sorted into two camps on almost every shelf and in almost every recommendation, and the labels attached to the camps are doing a lot of quiet work. Chemical sounds synthetic and slightly threatening. Mineral sounds natural and gentle. Neither impression is a good guide to which bottle belongs in your bathroom.
What the two actually are
Mineral filters are two compounds: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They sit largely on the surface of the skin and reduce the ultraviolet reaching it, mostly by absorbing it and partly by scattering it. The persistent claim that they work purely by reflecting light like a mirror is a simplification that has been repeated long enough to become received wisdom.
The other family, usually called chemical and more accurately called organic filters, is a larger group with names like avobenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, homosalate and, in some markets, the newer generation such as bemotrizinol. They absorb ultraviolet energy and release it as a negligible amount of heat.
So both families work by absorbing. The meaningful differences are elsewhere.
Where they genuinely differ
Appearance on brown skin. This is the difference that matters most to this blog's readers and gets discussed least. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are white powders, and a formula carrying enough of them to reach a high protection level tends to leave a visible cast. On fair skin it disappears. On Indian skin tones it can read as a grey or ashy film, and it is the single most common reason a sunscreen gets bought once and never finished. Formulators mitigate it with tinting and with finer particle sizes, but the constraint is physical and it has not gone away.
Organic filters are largely colourless, which is why most cosmetically elegant sunscreens use them or blend them with a small amount of mineral.
Feel and behaviour under other products. Mineral formulas tend to be thicker, and they are more prone to pilling under makeup or rolling off during application. Organic filters generally spread thinner and vanish faster, which matters because applying a full dose is what decides whether the number on the bottle means anything.
Reactivity. Zinc oxide is well tolerated and is the usual first suggestion for genuinely reactive skin, for skin recovering from irritation, and for children. Some organic filters, avobenzone in particular, are more associated with stinging around the eyes. Breakouts. Neither family is inherently pore-clogging. What causes trouble is usually the base the filters sit in: heavy emollients, thick silicone blends and rich creams. The safety argument, honestly
Some organic filters are absorbed into the bloodstream at measurable levels, which generated headlines when it was demonstrated. Detection is not harm, and the regulators who reviewed the data asked for more of it rather than withdrawing the filters. There is no established evidence of harm at normal use, and there is a very large body of evidence that unprotected sun exposure causes both skin cancer and the pigmentation this blog spends most of its time on.
If the uncertainty bothers you, mineral filters are a reasonable choice and you lose nothing by making it. What is not reasonable is using the debate as grounds for skipping sunscreen, which trades a hypothetical risk for a documented one.
Which to pick
For oily skin, skin that wears makeup, or anyone who has abandoned sunscreens over white cast: an organic or blended formula, chosen on texture, will get used in full and that is what protection depends on.
For reactive skin, skin recovering from a reaction, post-procedure skin, or anyone who simply prefers it: zinc-based, accepting that you may need a tinted version to avoid the cast.
For most people the honest answer is that the filter family is the least important variable. The important ones are whether you like the product enough to apply a full dose of it every morning, whether it covers ultraviolet A as well as B, and whether you reapply when the day calls for it.
