Sunscreen use across India follows the weather with almost perfect fidelity. Bottles come out in March, get used properly through May, drift through July and are forgotten entirely by the second week of heavy rain. The logic feels sound. There is no sun visible, the light is flat and grey, the day is cool, and the whole business seems like protection against a threat that has left town.
The threat has not left town. It has become invisible, which is a different thing.
Clouds filter light much better than they filter ultraviolet
Visible light and ultraviolet are not the same wavelengths, and cloud cover does not filter them identically. A thick overcast sky cuts the brightness you can see dramatically while allowing a substantial share of ultraviolet through. Broken cloud can be worse still, because light scattering off cloud edges can briefly raise ground-level ultraviolet above what a clear sky would deliver.
The wavelength that matters most here is ultraviolet A. It is present through daylight hours across the year with far less seasonal variation than ultraviolet B, it penetrates deeper, it passes through window glass, and it is the main driver of the pigment response this blog is largely about. Ultraviolet B, the sunburn wavelength, does drop under heavy cloud, which is exactly why the monsoon feels safe. You stop burning long before you stop pigmenting.

Why this specifically undoes pigmentation work
Fading a mark is slow. Skin turnover takes weeks and the honest horizon is months. Adding pigment is fast, and the monsoon in most of India runs long enough to cover a full fading cycle.
Someone who protects diligently through summer, stops in June, and resumes in October has left the largest block of the year unguarded and will typically find that autumn skin looks much like spring skin. The effort was not wasted, exactly. It was spent maintaining rather than improving. The honest difficulty with monsoon sunscreen is not whether it is necessary. It is that humidity makes it unpleasant. Sweat and high moisture in the air slow evaporation, so a formula that vanished in April sits wet in August, and anything applied over it pills. Under-application follows, and applying too little costs more protection than people expect.
A few adjustments make it survivable. Switch to a lighter texture for these months, a fluid or gel rather than the cream that suited winter, since the sunscreen that gets used in full beats the one that theoretically performs better. Let it set for a couple of minutes before anything goes on top. Skip the heavy moisturiser underneath on humid days, because skin holding surface water needs less of it, and let the sunscreen be the last layer over a light serum instead. Blot with tissue rather than reapplying over a wet film if the face feels slick by midday.

The rule that survives every season
Daylight, not sunshine, is the trigger for sunscreen. If it is light enough outside to see without a lamp, there is ultraviolet reaching your skin, and the fraction of it that drives pigmentation barely notices the clouds.
Reapplication can be relaxed on genuinely indoor rainy days in a way it cannot in May. The morning application cannot. It is the cheapest thing standing between three months of rain and a year of tone work, and it is the step that quietly disappears every June.
