Every list of tan removal home remedies names the same ten kitchen ingredients, and every list says all of them work. They do different things, and most of what they do has little to do with the tan.
It helps to know where a tan sits. The pigment is inside living skin cells, a few layers down, and it leaves when those cells reach the surface and shed. A pack that stays on for twenty minutes touches only the outermost dead layer. How to fade a tan covers that in full.
So the useful question for each remedy is what it does to the surface, and whether that helps or harms.
The mild exfoliants
Curd (dahi). Curd contains lactic acid, the same acid used in exfoliating lotions, at a much lower strength. Left on for a while it loosens a few surface cells and leaves skin feeling soft. That is a small, real effect. It is also why skin looks a little brighter after an ubtan: the dull top layer is thinner and reflects more light.
Besan (gram flour). A fine physical scrub. Mixed with curd it adds gentle friction as it is rinsed off. Rubbed hard, it is ordinary scrubbing, and scrubbed skin makes more pigment.
Papaya. Raw papaya contains papain, an enzyme that breaks down the proteins holding dead cells together. It works, and it can also sting. People with a latex allergy sometimes react to papaya, so it needs a patch test.
Coffee and sugar scrubs. Friction and nothing else. Coffee grounds are sharp-edged and too rough for the face.
These four all do the same job to different degrees. They remove some surface cells, the skin looks fresher for a day or two, and with sun protection in place they may bring the tanned cells up slightly sooner. Once a week is plenty.
The soothers
Aloe vera. Aloe gel cools skin that has had too much sun and adds a little water to the surface. The claim that it lightens comes from a compound called aloesin, which slows the pigment enzyme in laboratory conditions. The amount in a leaf is far below what those tests used. Aloe vera on the face goes through it.
Cucumber. Mostly water, and pleasant on warm skin. It has no effect on pigment.
Honey. A humectant that holds water against the skin while it is on. Honey on the face covers what it can and cannot do.
Soothers are worth using after a day in the sun because calm skin makes less pigment than irritated skin. They do not remove any.
The absorbers
Multani mitti. Fuller's earth soaks up oil and tightens as it dries, which gives a clean, matte, slightly lighter look for a few hours. It has no action on melanin, and on dry or sun-stressed skin it pulls out water the skin needed. If it burns, wash it off. Why multani mitti burns explains what is happening.
The ones that set a tan back
Lemon juice. The most recommended remedy and the worst. It is acidic enough to damage the barrier, and it contains compounds that react with sunlight and can leave a burn. The mark from that burn outlasts the tan. What lemon does to skin has the detail.
Baking soda. Strongly alkaline, while healthy skin is mildly acidic. It strips the surface and leaves it open to irritation.
Raw turmeric. Fresh haldi stains skin yellow for days and is a known cause of contact allergy. Turmeric for skin separates the kitchen spice from the cosmetic extract.
Tomato. Often described as a natural bleach. It is mildly acidic, it stings on sun-stressed skin, and there is no good evidence that rubbing it on fades a tan. Eating tomatoes is a different matter and has nothing to do with packs.
Potato juice. Harmless for most people. The idea that an enzyme in raw potato lightens skin has not been shown on actual skin.
What a home routine can do
A realistic version looks like this. A curd and besan pack once a week if the skin enjoys it. Aloe or a plain moisturiser after sun. Nothing acidic from the fruit bowl. And sunscreen or cover every day, because a tan cannot fade while it is being renewed. Does sunscreen prevent tanning explains how much it helps.
The pack is the small part of that list. Nearly all of the fading comes from the sun protection and the weeks that follow.
When to stop
Stop any remedy that stings, burns or leaves the skin red for more than a few minutes. Irritation on brown skin leaves pigment behind, so a remedy that hurts is working against the result.
If the darkness is patchy, sits on the cheeks or forehead, or has stayed the same through a season out of the sun, it may not be a tan at all. How to fade dark spots starts with working out which kind of mark it is.
Cham makes nothing from the kitchen and no sunscreen. The products in the range that carry niacinamide are leave-on, and they work over months alongside sun protection. None of them is a pack.
